Commonly Used HTML Tags

An HTML quick reference of commonly used tags courtesy of http://morpheweb.com/classroom.html
Always begin and end an HTML document with the following (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

Your text, graphics, links, etc., must go between the <BODY> tag and the </BODY> tag.

End your web page with the following:

<A></A> Creates hyperlinks to jump from one place on the WWW to another. Ex: <A HREF="AddyOfDesiredLink"></A> (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

<BGSOUND> Use to play a song or sound when the webpage is first opened. Place this tag in the HEAD section of your HTML document (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

<BIG></BIG> This tag increases font size by one up to a max of seven.

<BLINK></BLINK> When enclosed in this tag, text will flash on and off. Don't overuse as it can be annoying.

<BLOCKQUOTE></BLOCKQUOTE> This tag allows you to separate quotes within a body of text.

 OR gives you bold text (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

<CENTER></CENTER> Centers everything inside of the tag (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

<DIV></DIV> Put a part of your text in a separate container.

 For emphasis of certain text.

 Change font (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

<H1></H1> H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, and H6 are used to create text for the header of your page.

<HR> Places a horizontal ruled line to separate text, etc. Variations include: <HR noshade> (no shadow with the line) - <HR color="#FF0000> (red line but use any color code you desire) - <HR width=300> (a 300 pixel wide horizontal line but use any width that will fit your needs) - (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

 OR <italic></italic> Text in italics (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

<OL></OL> Ordered list OR <UL></UL> Unordered list (See Cyber Classroom) (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

 Creat a blank line to form a paragraph (usually don't need the /p tag termination.) (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

<PLAINTEXT></PLAINTEXT> Forces browser to ignore all elements within the plaintext tag.

<PRE></PRE> This is called "preformated text" and is useful if you wish to type something and have it appear exactly as you typed it (recognizes multiple space bar hits as well as return key, etc.) (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

<Q></Q> This tag inserts quotation marks.

  (repeat as needed) creates spaces as in using a spacebar in word processing. (see main text of Cyber Classroom)

<S></S> OR <STRIKE></STRIKE> These tags make text appear as though it has been crossed out.

 Produces a smaller font size than that being used around it.

 Gives you subscript.

 Gives you superscript.
